Child safety

Keeping children safe at KENEWA

Children and young people come to our celebrations, sport, mentoring and family days. Their safety comes first, every time.

A child in danger? Call 000 now. If you think a child is at risk of significant harm, call the NSW Child Protection Helpline on 132 111 (24 hours). You don't need proof.

Our commitment

KENEWA is committed to the safety, wellbeing and dignity of every child and young person who takes part in our activities. We have zero tolerance for child abuse. Every committee member, volunteer, mentor and coach shares responsibility for keeping children safe, and every concern is taken seriously.

We follow the 10 NSW Child Safe Standards, which are the accepted standard for organisations that work with children in New South Wales.

What we do

  • Checked adults. Mentors, coaches and anyone supervising children hold a NSW Working With Children Check, which we verify before they start and every year after.
  • Two adults, always. No adult is ever alone with a child out of sight of another adult.
  • Group messages only. Mentors and leaders contact young people only through group chats that include a parent or a second adult.
  • Parents know and agree. Parents or guardians sign consent before a child joins mentoring or sport, and children are signed in and out to a named adult.
  • Photos with permission. We publish a child's photo only with written consent, and never with their full name, school or address.
  • Children have a voice. Young people tell us what they enjoy and what should change, and we listen.

If a child tells you something

  1. Listen and believe them

Stay calm. Thank them for telling you. Don't ask lots of questions or promise to keep it secret.

  2. Make them safe

If they are in danger, call 000. If they are at risk of harm, call the Child Protection Helpline on 132 111.

  3. Write it down

Write what they said in their own words, with the date and time.

  4. Tell KENEWA the same day

Email info@kenewa.org. If the concern is about someone acting for KENEWA, they will be stood down from activities with children while it is looked into.
